‘Interlacing’
Knit: to form by interlacing yarn in a series of connected loops.
Marine Terrace as a row of ladies knitting – a row of ladies knitting as Marine Terrace.
There is something so cosy and homely in the the practice of knitting and I have tried to convey the cosy homeliness of Marine Terrace by creating this diptych.
When I saw Marine Terrace in Whitstable, with all it’s soft colour and charm, it made me think of those lovely aunts and grandmothers who knit pastel coloured garments and booties for newborns. My youngest child Orlando seemed to sneak his way onto the painting, as if knitted into it, just at the very edge. In the 1950’s version (featuring ladies from the Isle of Sheppey) there was an Orlando too, called Neville apparently. The ladies dresses correlate to individual houses and Orlando is nestled in the position where one of the houses appears a little smaller than the rest.
